Our History
Providing an Education for Life
for more than 50 Years
A Legacy to Cherish
Back in 1972, Marilyn and Wayne Weber laid the foundation of what would become a beacon of educational excellence. Originally named Katrice Montessori School, Montessori Community School was born out of a deeply personal mission to cater to the unique needs of their daughter, Patricia, a child with Down Syndrome. Nestled on the grounds of the First Christian Church on Liholiho Street in Makiki, it started humbly with just five young students. Yet, from these modest beginnings, our school blossomed into a sanctuary for children from all corners of the island, embracing a rich tapestry of abilities and backgrounds.
Embracing Community
In 1982, the school took on a new identity—Montessori Community School (MCS). This name change wasn't just cosmetic but a declaration of a broader vision. A vision that sees education not just as a solitary endeavor but as a community effort. We believe in harnessing the collective power of children, parents, teachers, and the wider community.
Our journey saw the birth of our Elementary program, starting with a single Lower Elementary class (grades 1-3). The demand and commitment led to establishing an Upper Elementary class (grades 4-6). Recognizing the growing need for quality early childcare, MCS introduced our first toddler class for 18-month-olds in 1987. By spring 1988, our expanding programs found a new home on the Nehoa Street campus, a testament to our continuous growth.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
At MCS, we stand tall on the shoulders of giants. Our current successes are a tribute to the trailblazers who came before us. Some are still with us, and their legacy endures. Former Heads of School Susan Siebert and Patsy Tom, alongside esteemed teachers like Jerry Mueller, Lynn Haia, Danni Vaiceliunas, Lisa Nakata, Lisa Browning, and Kathy Shirakawa, have all left indelible marks on our journey. Our current team, including dedicated members like Norine Galton, Sulia Ricote, and Elena Chan, continue to uphold and build upon this proud legacy. We are also privileged to maintain enduring relationships with legacy families, where former students now entrust us with their children.
The Montessori Community School of Today
Today, MCS stands as the sole fully accredited school in Hawaii, spanning from Early Childhood through Sixth Grade, recognized by both the American Montessori Society and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. We are steadfast in our mission: to nurture a lifelong love for learning, foster active community engagement, and cultivate a sense of stewardship for our natural world. Together, we continue to build a future that honors our past and inspires the generations to come.
